Mattapoisett currently has a one mile section of the South Coast Bikeway complete from the Fairhaven town line to Mattapoisett Neck Road. The town has an active Bike Path Committee that meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at Town Hall 7:30 PM. The town also has an active Friends group that promotes the bike path and sponsors fundraisers. (Address: PO Box 1336 Mattapoisett, MA 02739)
Phase two of Mattapoisett portion will connect the path from Mattapoisett Neck Road to Depot Street in the "Village".
This portion has passed the permitting phase and a bid was awarded. wbsm.com/dw-white-lowest-bidder-to-build-mattapoisett-bike-path-extension/?fbclid=IwAR3YDGJxiVLgbtTca99GF_bSNkOI6mTvlp7qhSpY4llkdE99kbCgemnrgr4
A spectacular preview of the project can be had by leaving your bicycle at the end of the paved bike path, crossing Mattapoisett Neck Road and walking down the wooded right of way for 1/4 mile. You won't be disappointed. The bridge across the Mattapoisett river was widened in 2010 by students of Old Colony Regional Vocational High School. It gives spectacular views of the Mattapoisett River Estuary.
We are fundraising for the “Marion Connection”
Plans for a Marion Connection (Industrial Drive extension) are taking shape thanks to a Friends committee that met over the winter and spring of 2018 to plan for a fully paved ½ mile connector between Marion Town line and Mattapoisett’s Industrial Drive. The hope is for a connector to be in place when Marion’s MassDOT-funded Marion Pathway gets built. (It’s on the schedule for 2021.)
In June 2018, the focus moved from a privately funded, Friends-built effort to one paid for with public grants. Through East Coast Greenways, we learned Mattapoisett is eligible for federal grant program called BUILD. If awarded, project costs would be reimbursed to the Town as grant-related tasks are completed. Friends worked with the Town in July to make a submission. We are now vigorously supporting the town by 1) helping to fund a Cost Benefit Analysis, and 2) promoting Town Meeting funding for professional project management, surveys, and preliminary design.
Read more about the project and how you can help this year…..Any contributions you make will go towards the design. Full details will be available soon.
