A South Coast Bikeway Informational Meeting was held on Monday, July 17, 2017 to highlight the details of a recently awarded Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Educational Grant.
The South Coast Bikeway Alliance is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a 2017 Massachusetts Department of Recreation  (DCR) Recreational Trail Building Grant. This "Trail Documentation, Stewardship and Skills Training" grant  will engage people from all of the communities along the South Coast to take part in a series of workshops including GPS Trail mapping, Sustainable Trail Development and specialty skills training in Stonework, Carpentry and Chainsaw work . Workshops will be held starting this fall and could run through next spring.  The workshops will be general in nature and applicable to any trail project.   This is the South Coast Bikeway Alliance's  first step in a long term plan to work with stakeholders throughout the South Coast to build a network of on and off road trails connecting our communities for recreational and alternative transportation.
All individuals interested in learning more about the trail building workshops were encouraged to attend.  The workshops are designed for small groups so space is limited.
Erin Amadon, from Peter S. Jensen, Associates was present to give a brief presentation to explain what the workshops would involve, who can benefit from them, provide examples of workshops that they have done in the past, and to provide some photos and to explain the types of things that people who have been through these types of workshops do with their acquired skills.
Please view the video of the meeting below.

The South Coast Bikeway Alliance is planning their 6th Annual Bike Summit to be held Thursday, March 24, 2016 at White's of Westport.  This year's summit focuses on "Organizing Safe Riding Groups" and hopes to bring awareness to the numerous cycling options available to all ages.
Erin Reed of "Safe Routes to School" will be the keynote speaker.  The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program promotes healthy alternatives for children and parents in their travel to and from school. It educates students, parents and community members on the value of walking and bicycling for travel to and from school. Guest panelists for young riding groups include representatives from Trips for Kids-New Bedford, Cycle Kids and Britland Park Dirt and Pump Track. These groups are committed to strengthening the emotional and physical health of children by giving them the skills to lead active and healthy lifestyles, using the fun and practical skill of riding a bike.

"Casual Riding Groups" will be the focus of the adult portion while highlighting cycling opportunities in the Southeastern Massachusetts area. Panelists from the "Bay Area Senior Cyclists", "Top of the Hill Gang", "Narragansett Bay Wheelmen" and the "Fall River Bicycle Committee" will be on hand to share riding options for adults.

The Summit not only brings together people passionate about bicycling, it launches the 3rd South Coast Summer Bike Challenge.  As part of the "National Bike Challenge" participants are encouraged to record their miles from May 1 to Labor Day.  Registration info for the Bike Challenge will be available at the summit.
All who have an interest in bicycling for recreation, alternative transportation, promotion of tourism and economic development on the South Coast are welcome and encouraged to attend this free event.  A welcoming reception begins at 5:30 p.m. Please come network with bike advocates from your community and learn more about infrastructure updates, local bike events and group riding. The speakers program begins at 6:00 p.m. and concludes at 7:30 p.m., followed by a social hour in White's Priscilla Room.
